THE BAMBOO ORCHID ORIGINATES FROM SOUTH-EAST ASIA, THE HIMALAYAS, MALAYSIA, THAILAND, SOUTH CHINA AND JAPAN. THE ORCHIDS IN THESE BEAUTIFUL COUNTRIES GROW INTO TRUE SHOWERS OF BLOSSOMS ON ROCKS IN MOUNTAIN VALLEYS AND IN TREES IN MOUNTAIN FORESTS. THIS IS ALSO WHERE THE ORIGINAL NAME – DENDROBIUM NOBILÉ – COMES FROM. DENDRON IS GREEK FOR ‘TREE’ AND ‘BIOS’ MEANS LIFE.

THE CONDITIONS IN THESE TROPICAL REGIONS ARE IDEAL FOR THE MYSTICAL BAMBOO ORCHID, EVEN AT GREAT HEIGHTS UP TO 2000 METRES. DURING THE DAY, THEY ARE PROTECTED FROM THE BRIGHT SUN BY THE CANOPY OF TREES AND THE FILTERED LIGHT ALLOWS THEM TO GROW OPTIMALLY. DURING THE NIGHT, WHEN THE TEMPERATURE FALLS, THIS BEAUTY RESTS IN THE COOL, GAINING NEW ENERGY TO FORM BUDS AND BLOSSOM ONCE AGAIN. SOME PLANTS CAN CARRY SOME 200-300 BLOSSOMS AT ONCE, ALL OF WHICH OPEN AT THE SAME TIME. THIS CREATES A TRUE EXPLOSION OF COLOUR AND SCENT.

Flowering cycle

The Bamboo Orchid is cultivated in the same way as it grows in nature for the best and strongest result. Alternating the right amount of light with a cooler environment in the nursery creates the most ideal conditions for growth and flowering. So you can enjoy weeks of a beautiful sea of flowers on your plants. In nature, the plant begins to flower in the spring. Towards the winter, the flowers fall of and the plant starts its journey towards the next flowering cycle.

Abundant flowering is not the only notable feature of the Bamboo Orchid. In Eastern culture, the plant is also considered to be good for your health, and is used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In TCM, which dates back more than 2000 years, dried, rolled-up parts of the plant are used to boost the immune system.

It’s believed that the plant parts have a positive effect on the digestion, so that you feel fitter. If you feel good, you are better able to deal with stress, which in turn helps to ward off ailments. According to this medicine, the orchid can help with stomach pains, joint pains and intolerance to gluten, it can lower the blood sugar and help with poor vision. The plant is even believed to inhibit tumours.

The orchid is also known as the ‘immortality herb’ because the sap from the plant, according to legend, has the power to raise people from the dead. At a cost of 0 for 500 grams, it is not a cheap ‘medicine’ which is why people prefer to harvest their own plant. As a result, many have risked their lives to pick the plant in hazardous spots.
